On June 16, 2021, the first EPS/XPS recycling plant based on the CreaSolv® Process was opened in Terneuzen (Netherlands).
It allows the separation of polystyrene from the legally banned flame retardant HBCD (hexabromocyclododecane).
PS Loop has succeeded in continuously implementing the production process in the medium-sized demonstration plant and producing "Loop_PS" recyclate. Tests have shown that the HBCD content of the recycled polystyrene is below the UTC (unintentional trace contaminant) level of 100 mg/kg. This is crucial as the recycled material can meet the legal requirements for use in EPS/XPS building applications. In fact, the looped EPS recyclate was successfully converted into new EPS raw material and then molded into insulation boards.
